I am confused and concerned by the Tribune’s coverage of Matt Gurtler’s position on the amended state budget. If he opposes “subsidies and government interference in the free market,” why does he claim to have been bullied by the threat of withdrawal of state funding to Rabun County? Doesn’t that include subsidies and government interference in the free market? Also, he opposed a 20% pay raise to state law enforcement personnel when they have gone since January 2008 without even a cost of living raise. Does he think this is a good way to maintain effective and efficient law enforcement in the state? Is opposing the governor’s budget really the best way to serve the interests of residents of Rabun County?
