Congratulations to the CLAYTON HERALD for its wise editorial of February 23, “The Bickering Must Stop.” The editors focused on the local water issue, but their calling out of everyone from neighbors in Rabun County to political parties at the local, state and national levels speaks to a growing “poison” in our great country, which can be encapsulated by the phrases “unwillingness to listen to each other” and “unwillingness to compromise.” Democracy cannot function effectively when those attitudes prevail.

We must start thinking in terms of accommodating each other’s interests somewhere between the extremes, which means all of us are a little bit unhappy. The alternative is stalemate and the failure to resolve, or at least manage, our problems.
